Music Networking Happy Hour

Please join us this coming Wednesday, September 13th for the MetroMusicScene.com/Six Points Music Festival happy hour at Iota Club and Cafe in Arlington, VA. The event runs from 6pm to 8pm and is free. IOTA's open mic begins at 8pm (sign up after 7pm), so feel free to bring your instrument along too (no drum kits, please).

These happy hours are designed to give musicians, music industry professionals, music fans and anyone else who would like to attend, the opportunity to network outside of the typical show scene. Basically, the happy hours are meant to be an opportunity for people to get together once a month, have a couple drinks and talk music or whatever you'd like. If you get there and don't recognize anyone, look for the people with the masking tape nametags.

The happy hours will provide an opportunity for networking with local musicians, venue owners, local music media, music fans, and the Six Points planning committee. If you are interested in volunteering for Six Points 2007 or would just like to network with others in the DC/NoVa/Md music scene, please come join us.

The End of Six Points 2006

13 venues and over 40 bands were involved this year. The festival has been written up at least 4 different times by The Washington Post this week, NPR affiliate WAMU 88.5 FM has aired a piece on Six Points three times in the past day, DCist has given Six Points a great deal of digital ink, On Tap magazine featured the festival in their lastest issue, and DC101's Local Lix dedicated a large part of their show this week to Six Points. And that's just a portion of the press the festival has gotten.

A huge thanks to the venues, the bands, the volunteers, the media, the music fans, the Washington Area Music Association for their sponsorship, the MetroMusicScene.com community, and everyone who got involved with Six Points this year. We couldn't have done it without you.

Be sure to be on the lookout for submission details for the 4th annual Six Points Music Festival (to be held in 2007) sometime this fall!

*Please Note - Heather Huff will now be taking over as the Six Points Music Festival Planning Committee Chairperson for 2007 although Melissa DePaulis will remain with the festival in an advisory capacity.

The festival was mentioned this morning on WAMU. It was a plug for Friday's Metro Connection and mentioned how Austin has SXSW, New Orleans has Jazz Fest and DC has Six Points!

WEBR did a 2 hour special on Monday featuring in studio performances by Army of me, Lucky Day and Lejeune and interviews with Shane Hines, Mike Holden, Melissa DePaulis and others. Fitz emailed our myspace and said he's going to try to play Monopoli and talk about the festival on his Friday show.

Melissa DePaulis and the Hickories will be on WAMU's Metro Connection Radio show on Friday at 1 pm. Host, David Furst will be interviewing Melissa and the Hickories as well as playing some tracks from other Six Points artists. On Friday, April 7th at 1pm, Six Points Music Festival 2006 artist, The Hickories, and the festival's Planning Committee Chairperson, Melissa DePaulis will be featured on WAMU's (88.5 FM) Metro Connection Radio show. Host, David Furst will be interviewing Melissa and the Hickories as well as playing some tracks from other Six Points artists.

The Hickories will be performing during the Six Points Music Festival at the State Theatre on Friday, April 7th at 8pm, opening for Taylor Carson Band, Getaway Car and Emmet Swimmming. Tickets are $13 and can be purchased in advance online.

We are pleased to announce the line-up for the 2006 Six Points Music Festival, showcasing 40+ bands at 13 D.C. area venues, Thursday, April 6th through Saturday, April 8th. The selection committee would like to thank the nearly 200 acts who applied for this year's festival. Every submission was listened to by the selection committee and we appreciate all of you taking the time to apply.

In determining the festival line-up, the selection committee rated each of the 194 submissions, on a scale of 0-5, in the areas of Songwriting/Lyrical Content; Vocal, Instrumental and Overall Performance; Originality; and Visceral Reaction. The average of the committee's votes for each performer was calculated and they were ranked accordingly. The committee then selected the highest ranking performers based on the number of slots available, taking into account the stage specs and musical genres that would be most appropriate for each festival venue.

This year's selection committee for the festival was chaired by Heather Huff and Adam Simkin (Entertainment DC), and included Jenni Chase (Capital Scene), Amber-Therese Foster (DC101 Local Lix), Amanda Mattos (Music: DCist.com), Joel Didriksen(Kingpin Photo/NPR's All Songs Considered), Eric Boucher (Bigyawn.net ) and Richard Brewer ( Independent Promotions Consultant &10 year Music Industry Veteran).

[Washington, DC] (December 1, 2005) – The third annual Six Points Music Festival, will take place Thursday, April 6 through Saturday, April 8, 2006 throughout the Washington, D.C. area, showcasing performers at DC9, IOTA Club and Café, Jammin’ Java, Rock N Roll Hotel, Staccato Lounge, The State Theatre, Strathmore, Velvet Lounge, Whitlow’s On Wilson and other to-be-announced venues. This year’s festival will again be co-sponsored by its founding organization MetroMusicScene.com and the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA). The festival is now accepting submissions from artists through January 15, 2006 and the line-ups for this year’s festival will be determined by the festival Performer Selection Committee and announced in early March.

Artists can submit materials to be considered for inclusion in the festival through the submission form available here. A CDR containing four original songs is required along with the submission form or artists can opt to include their MySpace.com web address on the form in place of a CDR. Full length CDs will not be accepted. A $10 submission fee is also required along with all submissions. The money collected through these submissions fees will be used to purchase advertising and promotional materials for the festival. All submissions must be postmarked by January 15, 2006. Out of town bands are welcome to submit materials although the selection committee will focus on Washington D.C. Metro area performers to fill approximately 75% of the festival’s line up. Last year’s festival showcased over 40 acts.

Founded in 2001, MetroMusicScene.com is a website, consisting of a D.C. music news blog and a 1,200+ member Yahoo Group, dedicated to increasing awareness of and participation in the vibrant music scene in and around the Nation’s Capitol.

WAMA is a non-profit tax exempt organization of music industry professionals committed to raising the profile of the region's diverse music community. WAMA's main goal is to promote Washington area music in general and to achieve national recognition of the region as an important center for live and recorded music.

The 6 Points Music Festival is Looking for Volunteers

MetroMusicScene.com's 6 Points Music Festival is currently seeking volunteers to join its festival planning committee.

If you would be interested in helping plan the 2006 6 Points Music Festival, a Volunteers' Information Session will be taking place next Wednesday, September 21st from 6-8pm at Iota Club and Cafe in Arlington, VA during the regular monthly ArlingtonMusicScene.com happy hour.

An outline describing the leadership positions available in the committee is located in the files section of the ArlingtonMusicScene.com Yahoo! Group. In addition to the leadership roles, there will also be many smaller tasks that the planning committee will be delegating to volunteers for completion as needed during the course of the festival planning process. Six Points: Night #5 (Monday)

It's the final night of the Six Points Music Festival 2005 and there are three shows to catch (one in Virginia, one in Maryland and one in D.C.). The first show gets under way at 6pm at murky coffee in Arlington, the Austin Grill Silver Spring show starts at 8pm and the Velvet Lounge show starts at 9pm. Details on all three shows are available in the schedule.

FMC: D.C. Policy Day
Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 12, the Future of Music Coalition will be holding a D.C. Policy Day, addressing "four emerging policy issues: Digital Audio Broadcasting & the Future of Radio; Low Power FM & Community Voices; Health Insurance and Musicians; Copyright in the Courts and Congress." This will take place at the Barbara Jordan Conference Center in Washington, D.C. More information is available here.

Six Points: Night #4 (Sunday)

Welcome to Sunday, night number four of the Six Points Music Festival. There are two days of music left and don't forget that on Tuesday--the day after the festival--the Future Of Music Coalition hosts their D.C. Policy Day. This is an event worth checking out.

But, before we get to Tuesday, there are two days of music left, with three shows tonight: two in the Clarendon section of Arlington (at IOTA Club & Cafe and at Clarendon Grill) and one in the Adams Morgan section of D.C. (at Madam's Organ). Details on all these shows and links to the performer's websites are availabe on the festival schedule.

The Audioblogger.com phone line wasn't cooperating for a Live Update from Night #3, but hopefully they'll have their service back up and running for an update from the Sunday night shows. Thank you everyone for coming out to hear the music. There are two nights to go and we look forward to seeing you there.

Thank you to everyone who came out Friday to the second night of the festival, for the shows at Dr. Dremo's Taphouse and Ragtime in the Courthouse section of Arlington.

Night number three of the festival brings three shows. The first is actually an afternoon show at Royal Lee in Arlington. This is the second year of the festival and the second year a Saturday afternoon show has taken place at Royal Lee. The music starts at 1pm and goes until 7. The night time hours will include two shows just up the road in Ballston. One will take place at The Front Page (9pm) and the other at Rock Bottom Arlington (9:30pm), where you can also find the Six Points Rye, a beer named after the festival. When the Six Points Music Festival debuted last year, it was a celebration of independent music in Arlington, with local bands playing at bars and clubs along Wilson Boulevard. The festival's name comes from what organizers termed the "six focal points" of Arlington County: Ballston, Clarendon, Columbia Pike, Crystal City, Rosslyn and Shirlington. This year, Six Points is looking beyond its borders and toward the greater Washington region, with shows taking place in Silver Spring, Adams Morgan and on U Street, as well as at Arlingtonian hangouts like Whitlow's on Wilson and the Front Page. Tonight's dualing kickoff shows take place at Whitlow's and Staccato. Whitlow's is headed up by No Second Troy, which Post critic Mark Jenkins compared with "Bruce Hornsby and the Dave Matthews Band, among others." Our pick, though, is Koko Boom at Staccato -- think a little Lenny Kravitz, maybe some Eric Benet (before his stint with Halle left him batty). This is rock that knows when to get in the pocket, or soul with some six-string nutritional supplements. You can decide for yourself, beginning at 10.

Before heading out to the shows Thursday night, everyone is invited to stop by Rock Bottom Arlington at 7pm for the tapping of the Six Points Rye, a beer named after the festival.

Festival Begins This Thursday, April 7

Jenni Chase will again be featuring Six Points artists on her Capital Scene radio show, this Sunday night at 9pm. Last Sunday, the entire show was dedicated to Six Points artists, with Michael Jantz doing an in-studio interview and performance. He'll be playing the Six Points show at Ragtime on Friday, April 8. This Sunday, Laura Tsaggaris will be the featured artist. She'll be appearing at the Six Points show at Rock Bottom Arlington on Saturday, April 10. Melissa DePaulis, the Performer Selection Committee Chairperson for Six Points, will also be on the show.

What is a Podcast? A Podcast is basically an mp3 file that people can download onto their computer and into an iPod or mp3 player. Technically, an actual Podcast uses as RSS feed to send the mp3 file out to anyone who subscribes to that Podcast with a podcast aggregator. So, someone could record an mp3 file each day of their own radio show and then the RSS feed would be accessed by all subscribers to that show through a Podcast aggregator. The subscribers can then listen to the Podcast on their computer using iTunes or another player, or they can put it on their iPod or mp3 player to listen to whenever they want. The article mentions that the duo will be performing "April 11 at Murky Cafe as part of Arlington's 6 Points Festival." Music Festival Set For April In D.C. Area
ArlingtonMusicScene.com’s 2nd Annual Six Points Music Festival To Include 5 Nights Of Live Music With Over 40 Acts At 13 Venues

[Arlington, VA] (March 10, 2005) – The second annual Six Points Music Festival, scheduled to take place from April 7 through April 11, will showcase over 40 performers at 13 venues throughout Arlington, Virginia and the Washington Metro Area. Co-sponsored by ArlingtonMusicScene.com and the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA), venues for this year’s festival include IOTA Club and Café, Velvet Lounge and Madam’s Organ. 160 acts submitted material for consideration by the Six Points selection committee; the full line-up of the 40-plus selected performers is available here.

Started last year to celebrate the anniversary of ArlingtonMusicScene.com, the festival gets its name from the Six Points of Arlington, representing the county's six major focal points: Ballston, Clarendon, Columbia Pike, Crystal City, Rosslyn and Shirlington. Last year's festival was concentrated primarily along Wilson Boulevard and near the Clarendon and Courthouse stops on Metro's Orange Line in Arlington. This year’s festival goes beyond that region, with shows in nearby Washington, D.C. and one in Maryland.

On Sunday evening, festival founder and D.C.-based musician Mike Holden explained to Z104’s Jenni Chase--on her Capital Scene radio show--that well-known music festivals such as the Austin, Texas-based South By Southwest are what he looks to as a model for Six Points. "South By Southwest is the music festival that I’ve been to that is what I’d love for [Six Points] to become for this area, like 10 years down the road," said Holden. "That’s really hard to duplicate, but that can be a model that we can look to."

In determining the festival line-up, the selection committee rated each of the 160 submissions, on a scale of 0-5, in the areas of Songwriting/Lyrical Content; Vocal, Instrumental and Overall Performance; Originality; and Visceral Reaction. The average of the committee's votes for each performer was calculated and they were ranked accordingly. The committee then selected the highest ranking performers based on the number of slots available, taking into account the stage specs and musical genres that would be most appropriate for each festival venue.

This year’s selection committee for the festival was chaired by Melissa DePaulis, a frequent participant on the ArlingtonMusicScene.com Yahoo Group, and included Tom Carrico (Studio One Artists), Jenni Chase (Z104), Mary Cliff (WETA), Heather Huff (Earvolution.com), Adrian Munoz (DCSpore.com) and Maria Villafana (washingtonpost.com/mp3).

In this post today to the ArlingtonMusicScene.com Yahoo Group, Melissa DePaulis--Performer Selection Committee Chairperson for this year's Six Points Music Festival--explained that the line-ups for this year's festival will likely be announced by the end of next week, at the latest, rather than this Thursday, February 24, as scheduled. She explains that "reviewing and discussing the submissions has required an average time commitment of 10+ hours from each committee member" and that "the committee should be done reviewing all 160 submissions by late [this coming] Thursday night."

The second annual Six Points Music Festival, scheduled to take place from April 7 through April 11, will showcase performers at venues throughout Arlington. Last year’s festival featured over thirty bands at venues such as IOTA Club and Café, Galaxy Hut and Whitlow’s On Wilson.

Artists can submit materials to be considered for inclusion in the festival through the submission form available here. A CDR, including three original songs, is required along with the submission form. Full CDs or press kits will not be accepted. A $10 submission fee is also required. Checks should be made out to the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA), who will be co-sponsoring this year’s festival along with the festival’s founding organization, the website ArlingtonMusicScene.com. The money raised through this will be used to purchase advertising for the festival. All submissions must be postmarked by February 7, 2005. The line-ups and venues for this year’s festival will be announced in late February.

J.P. McDermott and Western Bop, Backlick, and Koshari kicked off the first night of the first ever Six Points Music Festival last night at Dr. Dremo's Taphouse. The music followed a Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) panel on "How To Get Airplay."

Six Points continues on Tuesday night, with live music at Whitlow's On Wilson from Quazi, Tim King and the Righteous Sinners, and Viki Nova. The music gets started at 9pm, following the 5th Annual Clarendon Mardi Gras Parade, which begins at 8pm.

A couple of schedule updates for Six Points:

For the Tuesday night show at Whitlow's, Waking State is no longer on the bill. They had a recording schedule conflict and had to drop out. That leaves the line up for the Whitlow's show as Quazi, Tim King and the Righteous Sinners, and Viki Nova. Each act will play a 45 minute acoustic set, starting at 9pm.

For the Thursday night show at IOTA, in addition to Mike Holden and Paul Casey, the two other artists on the bill are Greg Roth and Lianna.

The festival starts Monday night at Dr. Dremo's Taphouse on Clarendon Blvd., with a free night of music from J.P. McDermott and Western Bop, Backlick, and Koshari. The music is proceded by a Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) panel, "How To Get Airplay," from 7pm to 9pm. The cost of the two hour panel is $15, or free for WAMA members.

There is also a write up on Six Points in the most recent edition of North Arlington magazine, thanks to Victoria Patchen from Six Points band Villarosie. Look for the Six Points Music Festival ad on page 36 of the program for the 18th Annual Wammie Awards, being held at the State Theatre tonight, Sunday, February 15. The ad lists all nine shows and the confirmed line-ups, as of the date the program went to press.

On Monday, February 23rd between 7 and 9pm, Six Points Music Festival artists Element will be on the George Mason University campus radio station, performing some live acoustic tunes and talking about some local music topics, including the Six Points Music Festival. At each Six Points Festival Event there will be a stack of Thank You Cards from Guitar Center - saying "Thank You for Supporting the ArlingtonMusicScene.com" - on the back of the card is a free gift when you spend $15 or more (It's for strings, cable, etc). These cards are good at any Guitar Center, but if you come to me, and let me know you got it at a Six Points Festival show, I'll hook you up especially!

When the band CubanStack plays Ragtime on Friday, February 27 as part of the Six Points Music Festival, they will be collecting canned goods for the Capital Area Food Bank. Josh Stack from the band is currently looking into setting this up at as many of the Six Points shows as possible. More details will be posted here as they become available.

Here in the first year of the Six Points Music Festival, word-of-mouth is going to be a huge factor. You can help spread the word about the festival, by sending people to this site, or by going to this Six Points event listing on Craig's List and using the "email this posting to a friend" option to send the whole festival schedule on to other people.

A week-long music festival from February 23 through February 26 in celebration of the third anniversary of ArlingtonMusicScene.com, Six Points Music Festival will feature over thirty bands at nine different Arlington venues, all of which are listed on the right hand side of this page, along with the date the festival will visit the venue.

The festival gets it's name from the Six Points of Arlington, representing the county's six major focal points: Ballston, Clarendon, Columbia Pike, Crystal City, Rosslyn and Shirlington. While this year's festival is concentrated along Wilson Boulevard and Metro's Orange Line Corridor, the festival organizers hope to expand the event in future years. As the festival grows, it will include multiple shows taking place at multiple venues.

This site will be updated shortly to include the schedule, a press release, band links and other information on the festival. The schedule for the Six Points Music Festival is currently available at this link.

Arlington Music Scene is an organization dedicated to increasing awareness of and participation in the vibrant music scene in and around Arlington, Virginia. Founded by musicians in February 2001, the organization provides a forum for artists, fans, residents and business owners to interact and pool their resources to benefit the community and the diverse array of local talent within the region. Arlington Music Scene represents a broad range of genres and interests, with the common goal of supporting and enhancing the flourishing regional music scene by fostering a sense of community and by sponsoring events, promotions and other activities. The group is in the process of applying for non-profit status.
